How to motivate employees with awards

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

Awards are valuable tools for business houses to use in order to influence and improve the working environment which has a far reaching impact on the company’s productivity.

Employee incentive and recognition schemes are increasingly becoming significant tools in the Human Resources strategy. This phenomenon is not surprising because stiff competition and fast pace has increased the demand on each one of us, at all levels of the organization. This has pushed human performance to be the most integral segment which contributes to the growth and success of the organization.

It has become normal for the employers to give “Performance related remuneration with target based earnings” in the recent times. This strategy is based on personal performance and salary of the employees. This system creates a great sense of responsibility and stimulates them to work harder, but it has been found that it is effective only in the initial stages of implementation.

Money, as an incentive, has limited motivational value because once the desired article is bought it stops being a stimulation, and it departs from the recipient’s mind as soon as the money has been spent. At the same time, once employees become aware that they cannot earn any more money as an incentive, there is nothing left to encourage them to put in additional effort for improving performance and productivity. Such incentive programs have measurable results which can be tracked and monitored.

On the other hand a recognition program has long term goals that reward individual activities as it relates to a group. A reward is for excellent performance and the goal is to set standards within the working group. The impact of such recognition programs may not be measurable instantly like the spurt of sales following the sales incentive program. But by focusing on excellence and rewarding the best performance, the pay-out is not in dollars and cents but in increased individual value who receives a citation or award for his / her exceptional performance. Tangible rewards motivate better than cash.

Often the hospitality management offers individual incentives in the form of vacation. It is amazing how hard people work when each sale translates into a vacation or another round of golf, etc. Individual travel incentives let people decide when and where they would wish to go and the long lasting benefits are cherished more than cash or other incentives. This corporate incentive program is an ideal way to thank loyal workers by offering non-value awards with a highly perceived value.

A striking example of such incentives is Toyota’s customized “Thank you” to its U.K. staff for their sterling performance in the country. The Managing Director of the company personally announced to all its employees that they would receive attractive gift wallets containing two nights’ deluxe accommodation for two people at any Marriott Hotel in the U.K. Similarly, the British Airways high fliers use Marriott Individual Incentives to encourage their executive club members to fly again.

An acrylic award plaque is perfect for anyone from employee of the month to the company CEO. The finely crafted awards make excellent tributes as well as great motivators in corporate awards and achievement programs. Each acrylic award is artfully designed, screen printed with organizational logo, recipient’s name and their achievement. Such quality awards provide a tangible symbol of achievement and serve as an encouragement to other employees. Hence, along with recognition awards serve a long term goal!
